FUOYE Marks World Environment Day with Media Engagement and Street Sensitization Campaign
In celebration of this year’s World Environment Day, the academic staff and students of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti actively participated in awareness campaigns centered on the global theme: “Beat Plastic Pollution.”
Two distinguished academic staff members—Dr. Faboya Lekan from the Department of Chemistry and Mr. Otugboyega Joseph from the Department of Environmental Management and Toxicology—featured on Progress FM 100.5, a national radio station, to educate the public on the urgent need to combat plastic pollution. During the live program, they emphasized the environmental and health hazards posed by plastic waste and encouraged proactive community actions to mitigate its impact.
World Environment Day, celebrated every June 5th, is spearheaded by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It serves as a global platform to foster environmental awareness and unite people across nations in the fight for a healthier planet. This year’s theme focuses on the alarming trend of plastic pollution and the need for sustainable, science-driven solutions.
Highlighting the importance of grassroots mobilization, students from FUOYE’s Department of Environmental Management and Toxicology also took to the streets in a sensitization campaign organized in collaboration with the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA). The outreach aimed to educate the public on proper waste disposal, the dangers of plastic abuse, and the need for collective responsibility in preserving the ecosystem.
As the world faces rising environmental challenges, such activities underscore FUOYE’s commitment to environmental advocacy and education.
