FUPRE VC Debunks Union Claims, Reaffirms Court Backing Amid Protest

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), Professor Ezekiel Agbalagba, has addressed recent protests and misinformation surrounding union recognition and staff entitlements.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to the rule of law and responsible journalism.

 On March 30, 2022, the National Industrial Court in Abuja ruled that the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) does not have the legal standing to unionize senior staff within a university setting.

PENGASSAN has filed a fresh suit (NICN/ASB/38/2024) at the Asaba Division of the National Industrial Court, with hearings set for November 2025.

Professor Agbalagba clarified that there was no intention to withhold Earned Allowances and that payments had been disbursed through recognized unions in accordance with federal approvals.

- Outstanding Payments: Specific administrative and technical issues are being resolved, and affected staff have been informed that all outstanding allowances will be fully paid within one week.

Professor Agbalagba rejected allegations of staff intimidation or rights violations, asserting that his administration is anchored on fairness, inclusion, and accountability.

 Professor Agbalagba called for "development journalism" that supports national growth through public education, constructive policy engagement, and innovation promotion.

The university is ready to partner with journalists, the energy sector, and policymakers to fulfill its mandate as Africa's premier petroleum university .
