FUTA Don Urges Information Managers to Harness Visual Communication to Counter Misinformation and Foster National Unity

In an age dominated by information overload, misinformation, and value fragmentation, the power of visual communication has become indispensable for shaping public perception and fostering social cohesion.

This was the central message of the 187th inaugural lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), delivered by Professor Emmanuel Oladumiye, a Professor of Graphic Design and Advertising, on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at the Obafemi Awolowo Auditorium.

Speaking on the topic “Graphic Design: Catalyst for Human Transformation and Development from Darkness to Light,” Professor Oladumiye underscored the role of graphic design as a frontline tool in combating misinformation, exposing deepfakes, and promoting national unity in the digital era. He explained that as artificial intelligence increasingly produces realistic fake images and narratives, graphic design must evolve as both a corrective and preventive force in the dissemination of accurate information.

According to him, “Graphic design has become a frontline tool in the fight against misinformation, especially now that AI can churn out convincing images and stories in seconds. A well-crafted visual can either flag a deepfake or, if misused, amplify a false narrative—so the designer’s responsibility has never been higher.”

He further emphasized that graphic design goes beyond aesthetics, serving as a catalyst for sustainable development. Through posters, campaigns, infographics, and eco-conscious branding, he said designers can promote responsible consumption, recycling culture, clean energy advocacy, urban cleanliness, and climate awareness.

Describing graphic design as “a rich and comprehensive visual language that communicates human aspirations and achievements,” Professor Oladumiye called for government-backed policies on outdoor advertising that prioritize environmental sustainability and urban visual order. Such policies, he suggested, should set clear guidelines for the design, placement, and lifespan of advertisements, while encouraging the adoption of recyclable and eco-friendly materials.

“Designers are no longer just stylists—they are educators, advocates, and innovators,” he said, noting that contemporary Nigerian graphic artworks have become vital tools for community development through the use of symbolic visuals such as road signs, billboards, and even national emblems like the flag.

He also proposed that design and communication curricula be updated to include visual literacy, cultural symbolism, and environmental responsibility, and urged nationwide campaigns to incorporate indigenous symbols and storytelling techniques that resonate with local audiences.

Professor Oladumiye advocated for stronger institutional and governmental support for Nigerian designers through grants, exhibitions, and competitions that reward transformative and sustainability-focused works. “Graphic design must be recognized as a strategic tool for shaping perceptions, influencing attitudes, and fostering national unity,” he stressed.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Taiwo Amos, commended Professor Oladumiye for delivering a thought-provoking and insightful lecture. He noted that intellectual engagements of this nature reflect the enduring tradition of academic excellence at FUTA and praised the lecturer’s outstanding contributions to the field of graphic design and visual communication.
