FUTA Student, Saheed Bags Space Generation Advisory Council Award

Saheed Oyekunle Oyetunji, a final-year student of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has been honoured with the prestigious African Space Leader Award by the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC).

Saheed Oyekunle Oyetunji, a final-year student of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has been honoured with the prestigious African Space Leader Award by the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC), Myschoolnews gathered.

The honour was bestowed on him at the 7th African Space Generation Workshop (AF-SGW) which held in Harare, Zimbabwe, between November 29th – 30th, 2023,

Saheed's selection for this award is a testament to his exceptional dedication to space education and advocacy, both at FUTA and beyond. As the former President of the Space Club at FUTA, Saheed spearheaded outreach programs to introduce space knowledge to students, particularly freshmen, fostering a passion for space exploration.

Joining SGAC in 2020, he actively engaged as a member of the Small Satellites project group and virtually attended various organization events, showcasing his commitment to the global space community.

The African Space Leader Award not only acknowledges Saheed's leadership potential and skill but also underscores his potential to bring unique and insightful perspectives to the 7th AF-SGW. 

This international platform serves as a dynamic space for Saheed to collaborate, advocate, and contribute meaningfully to discussions surrounding the future of the space sector in Africa.

Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) is the voice of students and young professionals on international space policies United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and other international organizations through its Observer Status with the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS). SGAC has also been an official patner of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) since 2008.

FUTA and the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, celebrate Saheed on this great achievement and his contribution to the growth of FUTA space club and community. 

FUTA hosted the first ever African Regional Space Generation workshop between 16th and 17th November, 2017.
