In a resounding celebration of academic excellence, the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), is set to hold its 33rd convocation ceremony for the 2020/2021 academic session. The event, spanning from November 10 to November 18, 2023, will see a remarkable 195 students being awarded first-class honors degrees.

During a press briefing on Friday, November 10, 2023, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, shared the exciting news, revealing that a total of over 3,000 students would be conferred with first degrees. Miss Oluwanifemi Favour Olajuyigbe from the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering stands out as the overall best student, achieving the highest Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.93.

Breaking down the class of degrees, Professor Oladiji reported that 1510 students secured Second Class Upper, 1515 attained Second Class Lower, 254 achieved Third Class, and 2 received Pass Division degrees. The convocation will also honor 1,806 graduands with Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, and Doctoral degrees.

The highlight of the week-long ceremony includes the Convocation Lecture titled "Knowledge and Research: The Foundation of Prosperous Economy," to be delivered by Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, on November 16, 2023, at the Obafemi Awolowo Auditorium, FUTA, at 3 PM.

Professor Oladiji emphasized ongoing developments at the university, including infrastructure upgrades such as lecture theatres, laboratories, hostel accommodations, roads, and enhanced ICT infrastructures. The new FUTA School of Professional Development has been launched, offering courses to enhance manpower development in critical areas. Furthermore, the university has introduced new academic programs and received approval for the Open and Distance Learning program in Computer Science, along with additional short-term courses in the Centre for Continuing Education.

Highlighting FUTA's achievements, Professor Oladiji noted the university's consistent ranking as the country's best University of Technology and best specialized institution. FUTA secured the 3rd position in the Times Higher Education 2024 ranking and achieved a commendable placement in the AD index Research impact ranking.

In terms of research, the Centre for Research and Development (CERAD) at FUTA has attracted and managed over One Billion Naira (N1,000,000,000) in national and international research grants between 2021 and 2023.

The Vice Chancellor expressed pride in the university's contribution to manpower development for other institutions, citing the recent appointment of Professor Shadrach Akindele as the Vice Chancellor of Redeemer's University, Ede. She affirmed FUTA's commitment to maintaining its position as a research-intensive university with national relevance and a global outlook.

Chairman of the Ceremonials Committee, Professor Eunice Adeparusi, assured the public that comprehensive arrangements, including security and traffic control, have been put in place for a seamless convocation ceremony, expressing confidence in its smooth execution.
