The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is currently grappling with the detrimental effects of illegal mining activities within its premises, raising alarms over environmental degradation and academic integrity.
Despite the government's purported efforts to curb unregulated mining, the ongoing operations on OAU's land suggest a systematic and organized criminal enterprise. Areas within the university's staff quarters have been severely impacted by mining activities, prompting concerns over the complicity of certain individuals or entities with powerful connections, as suggested by Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake.
The distinction between "illegal miners" and those potentially backed by government certifications further complicates the situation, underscoring the need for urgent intervention to safeguard both the environment and the university's educational mandate.

Illegal mining operations pose grave environmental risks, particularly due to the use of hazardous chemicals such as mercury and cyanide, which can contaminate water sources and endanger human health and wildlife. Moreover, the indiscriminate use of heavy machinery and explosives exacerbates environmental degradation, deforestation, and habitat destruction, undermining biodiversity and ecological balances.
The encroachment of miners onto OAU's land not only jeopardizes environmental sustainability but also undermines the institution's core mission of academic excellence. It is incongruous for a university with a department of Geology to be embroiled in such activities, which run counter to the purpose of advancing knowledge and research.
Rather than participating in environmentally hazardous mining endeavors, OAU should be at the forefront of innovative research aimed at leveraging mineral resources to address national economic challenges. The current situation constitutes economic sabotage and undermines the university's role in national development.
