In response to hazardous air quality, schools were closed across India's capital on Friday, affecting its 30 million residents. The city has been engulfed in a noxious grey smog due to a combination of factors, including the burning of crop stubble by farmers, vehicle exhaust, and industrial emissions.

According to monitoring firm IQAir, levels of the most dangerous PM2.5 particles, which are small enough to enter the bloodstream, were nearly 35 times higher than the daily maximum recommended by the World Health Organization. As a result of this severe pollution, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced the closure of all primary schools in the city for at least two days.
