The Honourable Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, SAN, CON, has inaugurated the Governing Councils of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and other federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country. The ceremony, held on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at the National Universities Commission (NUC) auditorium in Abuja, marked a pivotal moment in the governance restructuring of these institutions.

Since the dissolution of the councils by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023, the institutions have been managed by their respective Vice-Chancellors. The inauguration signifies a renewed focus on governance and operational efficiency in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Minister Mamman emphasized the importance of the occasion, stating, "With this ceremony, the nation’s tertiary institutions will achieve a remarkable transformation for the benefit of our children and generations to come." He urged the new councils to familiarize themselves with institutional Acts, government policies, and other relevant documents to ensure effective governance.

Furthermore, Mamman charged the councils to explore diverse funding sources, including partnerships with the private sector and international organizations, to ensure financial sustainability. He stressed the prudent utilization of government allocated funds and called for transparency and probity in all council activities.

Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, Minister of State for Education, commended the appointees for their contributions to Nigeria's development, expressing confidence in their ability to steer the institutions towards excellence.

Chief Wole Olanipekun, Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Lagos, speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated chairmen, emphasized collaboration between councils and university management. He urged councils to support Vice-Chancellors in enhancing institutional growth and cautioned against actions that could disrupt academic and administrative harmony.
