Awwalu Salisu, a 23-year-old commercial tricyclist from Kano, gained nationwide acclaim for his remarkable act of honesty when he returned a substantial sum of N15 million that was inadvertently left in his tricycle by a Chadian businessman in 2023. In recognition of his integrity, Awwalu has been awarded a scholarship worth N250 million to support his education up to the PhD level.

Subsequently, Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, who was also recognized as the co-winner of the LEADERSHIP Governor of the Year Award, offered additional support to Awwalu. Governor Bago announced a N250 million scholarship award to appreciate Awwalu's honesty and inspire other young Nigerians to emulate his virtuous behavior.

Governor Bago detailed the breakdown of the scholarship, with contributions from various sources including himself, President Bola Tinubu, ministers, APC Governors Forum, and the Niger State government. Additionally, he pledged to name one of the road projects he is undertaking in Niger State after Awwalu, further immortalizing the tricyclist's commendable deed.
