The Kaduna State University (KASU) Department of Public Administration held its inaugural National Conference on Thursday, 26th July 2024. The event took place at the university's 1000-seater auditorium on the main campus and focused on the theme "Contemporary Issues: Insecurity, Poverty, Unemployment, Sustainability, National Integration, and Fuel Subsidy Challenges."
In his opening address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abdullahi I. Musa emphasized the pivotal role of educators in addressing contemporary societal challenges. He highlighted the importance of research and teaching in finding solutions to issues such as insecurity and poverty. Prof. Musa congratulated the organizers and the management team for their efforts in making the conference a success.

The Chairman of the organizing committee, Prof. Aminu Ladan Sharehu, who also serves as Chairman of the Kaduna State Local Government Service Board, welcomed the dignitaries and expressed his gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor for his support. He praised the introduction of the collegiate system at the university and thanked the staff and students for their contributions to the event. Prof. Sharehu expressed hope that the conference would become a recurring platform for addressing national issues.
Prof. Gimba Victor Kyari, Provost of the College of Communication, Social and Management Sciences, spoke on the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. He encouraged ongoing engagement and knowledge sharing among academic disciplines to tackle Nigeria’s multifaceted challenges effectively.
Representing the Governor of Kaduna State, His Excellency Sen. Uba Sani, the Special Adviser on Student Affairs, Hon. Hassan Rilwan, praised the university for its initiative. He highlighted the state government's efforts to address insecurity, poverty, and unemployment, including the employment of vigilantes, the upcoming launch of a lithium plant with over 8,000 job openings, and skills acquisition training programs.

A key presentation was delivered by Prof. Muhammad Tanko, former Vice-Chancellor of KASU, on "Fuel Subsidy Removal in Nigeria: Implications and the Way Forward." Prof. Tanko discussed the historical context of fuel subsidies, their socio-economic implications, and proposed strategies for economic recovery. The presentation was followed by an engaging question-and-answer session.
The conference was attended by several notable dignitaries, including Alh. Sadiq Mamman Lagos, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Mahmud Lawal, Emir of Zazzau His Highness Amb. Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, represented by Wazirin Zazzau Alh. Shittu Dikko, and various university officials and stakeholders.
The event underscored KASU’s commitment to addressing critical national issues through scholarly discussion and interdisciplinary collaboration.
