A Year of Service: Reflections on the NYSC Journey

Every Nigerian graduate dreams of donning the iconic khaki and proudly serving their country, even as the system may not always reciprocate. For many, the 12-month service under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme represents a significant period of growth, filled with unique experiences, challenges, and opportunities.

Life in camp can be intense, with activities scheduled from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Despite the demanding schedule, the camp experience remains relatively manageable compared to the post-camp challenges. Corps members enjoy three free meals a day, a small consolation amid the rigors of camp life.

After relocating from Kaduna State to Kano for personal reasons, I was posted to the Department of Biochemistry at Bayero University Kano. However, I soon realized that corps members there had limited opportunities to interact directly with students. Driven by a passion for community service, I sought out a secondary school where I volunteered as a chemistry and biology teacher.

At the school, I went beyond regular classes by establishing an extra lesson program aimed at preparing graduating students for their JAMB, WAEC, and NECO exams. The program included special training on critical exam questions and guidance on selecting suitable courses and universities based on the students' potential and interests.

The impact of this initiative was evident as many of these students achieved impressive scores in the 2024 JAMB exams, with expectations of similar or better results in their WAEC and NECO exams.

Teaching and lecturing equipped me with a variety of hard and soft skills, including public speaking, effective communication, time management, critical thinking, and decision-making. These skills, honed through the NYSC scheme, will undoubtedly benefit my future endeavors.

While the NYSC scheme has a commendable objective, there is a need for modifications, especially in light of current issues such as insecurity and inflation in the country.

Alhamdulillah! I am proud to say that I served Nigeria to the best of my ability. I pray for Allah SWT to grant us His endless mercy and blessings, and to guide us through life's challenges. May the skills and experiences gained during this service continue to shape and enhance my future endeavors. Ameen.
