The Lagos State government is exploring the possibility of prohibiting beer parlours and drinking joints from operating in close proximity to schools. Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, shared this proposal during a media briefing at the ongoing National Council on Education meeting in the state.

Alli-Balogun emphasized the importance of fostering a safe environment for students, highlighting the correlation between exposure to alcohol and smoking and potential negative influences on students. He noted that the state government has initiated safety clubs in schools, collaborating with various stakeholders, including the police, Nigerian Immigration Service, Customs services, traditional rulers, CDAs, and CDCs.

The commissioner mentioned the launch of the 'War Against Drug Abuse' campaign in schools in Epe as an example of community collaboration with security agencies to combat drug abuse and other social vices. He stressed that the initiative is a collective effort to raise awareness about the adverse effects of drug abuse in society.
