Lagos State's Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Tolani Sule, has revealed plans for the initiation of academic operations at the Lagos State University of Medicine, with student admissions slated to commence in September 2024.

During the inaugural Public Lecture organized by the Lagos State Postgraduate School in collaboration with the Global Association of Postgraduate Students (GAPOGS), Hon. Sule made this announcement. The event, themed "Connecting Gown and Town" and focusing on the topic "Renewed Hope Agenda: The Role of the Academia," took place at the Makanjuola Lecture Theatre, Main Campus, Ojo, on April 6, 2024.

The Commissioner highlighted that the new university, dedicated to medicine and related medical courses, marks the fourth institution established by the Lagos State government. He emphasized that its establishment aims to address challenges such as the "Japa syndrome" and the limited quota allocated to Lagos State in medical education admissions.

Hon. Sule stressed the importance of fostering collaboration between academic institutions and society, encapsulated by the concept of "town and gown." He noted that this symbiotic partnership is essential for societal transformation and progress, with academia serving as a catalyst through research, innovation, and education.

Furthermore, the Commissioner outlined recommendations to harness the potential of academia in advancing the renewed hope agenda. These include enhancing research and innovation ecosystems, promoting collaboration between academia and industry, and investing in curriculum development and infrastructure to align education with societal needs.

In her remarks, represented by Prof. Olayinka Olawode, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, underscored the pivotal role of universities and research institutions in shaping society's future. She emphasized the academia's responsibility in conducting research, driving innovation, and fostering critical thinking to address complex societal challenges.

Prof. Ibrahim Olateju, the Dean of Postgraduate Studies, highlighted the growth and achievements of the Lagos State University Postgraduate School since its establishment in 1996. He showcased the institution's array of programs and its distinguished alumni, including influential figures in various sectors.
