Language, A Potent Tool For Communication, Says UNICAL Lecturer, Prof. Suzanna Mark Umoh

The 118th Inaugural lecturer of the University of Calabar,(UNICAL), Prof. Suzanna Mark Umoh has identified language as a potent tool for communication, saying it enhances effective teaching, training and learning, Myschoolnews gathered.

Prof. Suzanna Umoh stated this at the Unical International Conference Centre while delivering the institution's 118th inaugural lecture on the topic; " Language- Conveyor- Belt To Academic Pharos: Teacher's Briefcase Pedagogic Imperatives".

According to the inaugural lecturer, language which is a means of communication is used to improve knowledge and develop skills, attitudes and values.

Suzanna Umoh, a Professor of Curriculum, Language Arts and Communication Skills posited that all societies of the world use education and Language in equipping their young so that upon graduation they will be able to play their proper roles and contribute to the growth of such societies.

Hear her, " There are three forms of education, namely, formal, informal and non-formal. In its formal form, education is given in designated institutions. The medium of instruction is usually Language in all its ramifications.

" In school, all knowledge and skills are parcelled out into units called subjects. All of these subjects are taught using Language. Interestingly, language courses are also taught through a medium called language, for language enables people to talk about language."

She said as teachers teach subjects or courses using language, students learn these subjects through language.

The Don said as teachers recommend reading materials to their students, they should be encouraged to practice ' written retellings', adding that, students should be allowed to express themselves in writing.

" Teachers could adopt the practice of grouping students because the question of over-population on this side of the globe will always arise.

" Students' should be asked to present their written retellings' as part of their seminars", she added.

The Vice Chancellor of Unical, Prof. Florence Obi, in her remarks, commended the inaugural lecture for contributing to knowledge, even as she described her as an astute educationist who has made valuable impact in the institution and society.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Prof. Eno Grace, the University helmsman described the topic of the lecture as ' captivating, saying it is in sync with current realities in the education sector.

The well-attended event featured the presentation of a memento to the inaugural lecturer by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration on behalf of the Vice Chancellor.
