A team from Lagos State University (LASU), including members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) and campus journalists, actively participated in a pivotal two-day workshop organized by Alliances for Africa. Held at Bolton White Hotels and Apartment, Abuja, on June 28-29, 2024, the workshop aimed to formulate a strategic plan addressing sexual harassment and gender policies within Nigerian institutions.

In her opening address, Iheoma Obibi, Executive Director of Alliances for Africa, welcomed the participants and praised their commitment to combating sexual harassment in their respective institutions. Obibi highlighted the pressing need for systemic change, emphasizing that sexual harassment is a widespread issue impacting all genders in Nigerian universities.

Blessing Duru, Project Director of Alliances for Africa, provided a comprehensive overview of the initiative. Her presentation covered the current landscape of sexual harassment in Nigerian tertiary institutions, citing key statistics and findings from recent studies. Duru also outlined the project's objectives, strategies, and engagement with significant bodies such as the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The workshop facilitated various interactive sessions, where SUG representatives and campus journalists shared their experiences and concerns regarding sexual harassment. Tobun Dolapo, LASU's Student Union President, offered insights into the measures taken at LASU to address this issue over the years.

Participants engaged in group planning activities, discussing their responsibilities and expectations as student leaders. These sessions provided a platform for open dialogue and the exchange of ideas aimed at fostering a safer and more inclusive environment on campuses.

Rejoice Wobilor-Agua, Communication Policy and Advocacy Officer of Alliances for Africa, introduced the participants, set expectations, and established ground rules for the workshop. The event concluded with an open forum where student leaders and campus journalists explored opportunities for leveraging resources and developing effective strategies to combat sexual harassment.

The workshop, which concluded on June 29, 2024, marked a significant step towards addressing sexual harassment in Nigerian tertiary institutions. The collaboration between student leaders and campus journalists is expected to result in the development of robust policies and strategies that promote gender equality and a safe educational environment for all students.
