The Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Otto-Ijanikin, Lagos, recently held a summit aimed at addressing the prevalent challenges affecting teaching practices among undergraduate teachers in Lagos State. Organized by the Directorate of Teaching Practice, the summit brought together key stakeholders in the education sector to explore practical solutions to enhance teaching quality.

The summit, held at LASUED’s main campus, focused on the impact of teaching practices on the quality of education, emphasizing the need for adequately trained teachers at primary and secondary school levels. Acting Director of the Directorate of Teaching Practice, Dr. Foluke Abimbola Akinkuotu, highlighted that the summit aimed to identify the obstacles student-teachers face and explore innovative solutions to improve their teaching experience.

Akinkuotu outlined three critical areas for enhancing teaching practices: mentorship and support, practical experience, and feedback mechanisms. She noted that these factors are essential for producing competent teachers capable of delivering quality education.

Key speakers at the summit, including Prof. Femi Fakolade, emphasized the importance of synergy between students and teachers and the need for teachers to possess a solid understanding of their subjects to effectively guide students. Fakolade also stressed the significance of modest attire among teachers, linking professional dressing to respect and admiration in academic settings.

Dr. Emi Shittu, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at LASUED, underscored the importance of monitoring and support for teaching practices in primary and secondary schools. He praised Lagos State's proactive approach to tackling educational challenges through continuous professional training for teachers.

The President of the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Lagos State Chapter, Masheyi Olushola, urged teachers to invest in personal development and maintain a passion for teaching. He encouraged educators to expand their knowledge beyond their specialized fields to enhance their teaching quality.

Kasali Wahab, Permanent Secretary in the Lagos State Ministry of Education, called for curriculum updates to align with the evolving economic needs, particularly in information technology. He expressed readiness to collaborate with initiatives like the LASUED summit to improve educational standards.

The summit also featured insights from Dr. Biliki Sani, a representative of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), who encouraged teachers to register with the council for official recognition. She emphasized the importance of embracing the teaching profession with pride.

Overall, the summit provided an interactive platform for LASUED students to discuss the challenges of teaching practices, calling for comprehensive strategies to address these issues.
