The Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye, highlighted the importance of tree planting for environmental protection during the 2024 Lagos State Annual Tree Planting Ceremony.

The Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye, has emphasized the critical role of tree planting in environmental conservation. Speaking at the 2024 Lagos State Annual Tree Planting Ceremony held at the Oto campus, she highlighted the state government’s commitment to creating a sustainable environment.

Represented by Deputy VC Dr. Morufu Adedayo, Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye urged LASUED staff and students to actively participate in tree planting both on campus and at home. She stressed the importance of nurturing planted trees to ensure their survival, contributing to a sustainable future for generations of Lagosians and the global community.

The ceremony was attended by key LASUED officials, including the acting Deputy VC, Registrar Mr. Opeoluwa Akinfemiwa, Bursar Mr. Ganiu Adeniyi, Ceremonies Committee Chairman Dr. Aderonke Ogini, and various staff and students.

“By this singular act, you would be recognized as someone who has not only contributed immensely to the survival of the present generation but also participated significantly in the ambition to create a sustainable future for generations of Lagosians and the human race in general,” Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye stated.

She described trees as essential to ecosystems, highlighting their role in moderating climate, absorbing and storing rainwater, and preventing the transport of chemicals into drinkable water. Trees also enhance urban environments, bringing natural elements and wildlife habitats into cities, thus improving quality of life.

Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye noted that LASUED has embraced the culture of tree planting since the campaign was launched in Lagos 16 years ago. She called for the practice to be replicated across all university campuses, aligning with the United Nations’ call for tertiary institutions to be catalysts for environmental sustainability.

The event, themed “Nourish our Future,” featured a demonstration of tree planting techniques by Akinyele Stephen, a 300-level Agricultural Department student. The highlight was the planting of trees by LASUED principal officers, symbolizing their commitment to the environment.
