MAAUN Students Engage in MILID-UNESCO Workshop on Media Literacy and Peacebuilding

Students from Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) recently participated in a two-day Media and Information Literacy (MIL) workshop, organized by the MILID Foundation in collaboration with UNESCO. The event, held from October 22 to 24 as part of Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2024, welcomed MAAUN students from various departments, accompanied by Professor Muktar Said, Dean of the School of Social and Management Sciences.

Alongside Yusuf Maitama Sule University, MAAUN was among the only two universities in Kano selected for this significant event, which aimed to foster critical media engagement and equip participants with tools to address misinformation. A highlight of the workshop was a presentation by MAAUN faculty member Dr. Khadijah Sanusi Gumbi on “The Role of Media in Conflict,” where she emphasized media’s power to either escalate conflict or promote peace based on ethical reporting and media literacy.

The event reinforced the role of media in building peaceful societies and included capacity-building sessions for youth, underscoring the critical importance of ethical journalism in mitigating conflict and supporting intercultural dialogue.
