Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has become the first university in northern Nigeria to attain corporate membership of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).

Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has made history as the first university in northern Nigeria to attain corporate membership of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR). The announcement was made by Prof. Sule Yau Sule, a Council Member of the NIPR, during an induction ceremony for 50 Mass Communication students into the institute.
Prof. Sule, who also serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors at Image Merchants Promotion (MPR), noted that MAAUN holds the highest student membership of NIPR nationwide. He emphasized that acquiring NIPR membership provides students with industry recognition, professional credibility, and valuable networking opportunities crucial for career growth.
The induction ceremony, held at the School of Social and Management Sciences, underscored the significance of professional affiliation for students pursuing careers in communication, journalism, and public relations. The initiative aims to provide students with access to mentorship, specialized training programs, workshops, and career development opportunities, equipping them with a competitive edge in the job market.
Speaking at the event, Malam Yushau A. Shuaib, Publisher of PR Nigeria, highlighted the intersection between NIPR and social media. He explained how public relations plays a pivotal role in shaping national discourse, managing public perception, and fostering transparency. He further stressed that effective integration of PR strategies with social media can counter misinformation, strengthen national cohesion, and enhance policy awareness. Mal. Shuaib also cautioned students against the dangers of fake news, urging them to adopt responsible digital practices, verify information before dissemination, and use social media for nation-building.
In his address, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr, President of MAAUN, outlined the institutional benefits of partnering with regulatory bodies like NIPR. He encouraged students to actively engage in NIPR activities, build professional connections, and leverage their knowledge to address societal challenges and promote national unity.
Additionally, the Head of Career Guidance, Training, and Placement Unit, Engr. Bashir Garba, appealed to NIPR members to introduce programs that would benefit students and enhance their academic and professional development.
The event concluded with a question-and-answer session, allowing students to engage directly with the speakers and gain deeper insights into contemporary public relations strategies.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Habib Awais Abubakar, VP Administration, expressed appreciation to the guest speakers for their valuable contributions and commended the university’s commitment to professional development.
A major highlight of the event was the presentation of the corporate membership certificate to MAAUN, alongside certificates of attendance awarded to the inducted students.
