NANS Issues 24-Hour Ultimatum to Police for Release of Detained Student Protesters

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the recent arrest of peaceful protesters in various states, including Akure, Kaduna, Jos, and Kano. In a statement issued on August 11, 2024, NANS demanded that the Nigeria Police Force release all detained student leaders and protesters within 24 hours or face a nationwide protest.

NANS President of the Senate, Comrade Henry Okunomo, called on the governors of the affected states to intervene to prevent further escalation. The association emphasized that the protests were constitutionally protected under Sections 40 and 39(1), which guarantee freedom of expression and assembly.

The group's demands include the immediate release of all detained protesters, respect for citizens' rights to peaceful assembly, and protection against intimidation or arrest for expressing dissent.
