Nasarawa State University Keffi held its first International Conference on Indigenous African Spiritualities, featuring prominent speakers and honoring distinguished dignitaries.

Nasarawa State University Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies Hosts 1st International Conference

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), successfully hosted its first International Conference themed "Indigenous African Spiritualities, Power and Development."

The conference, which took place at the University’s Assembly Hall, gathered scholars, students, and dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond to explore the intersection of indigenous African spiritual practices, power structures, and development.

The event was officially opened by the Vice-Chancellor, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Abdullahi Sallau Modibbo. The keynote address was delivered by Professor Habila Dandem Danfulani Umar from the University of Jos, Department of Religion and Philosophy. In addition, two lead papers were presented: Professor Alloy Ihuah from Benue State University, Makurdi, led the first paper, while Professor Victor Igbum, also from Benue State University, presented the second.

The ceremony’s highpoint was the presentation of awards to notable personalities for their contributions to academia and society. Among the honorees were Nasarawa State University’s current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sa'adatu Hassan Liman, the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Professor Suleiman Bala Mohammed, and Honorable Gaza Jonathan Gbefwi, representing Kokona, Keffi, and Karu Federal Constituency. Other distinguished awardees included Professor Ishaya Mallo Makpu, the first Head of the Department of Religious Studies, and Pastor (Mrs) Sarah Omakwu.

The event marked a significant milestone for the department and the University, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to scholarly excellence and the promotion of African philosophical and religious thought.
