Nasarawa State University Hosts 3rd Special Lecture Series, Inducts Medical Geology Students

Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), recently hosted its 3rd Special Lecture Series, themed "Safe Mining, Chemicals, and Economic Diversification." The event also marked the historic induction of the university's first set of postgraduate students in Medical Geology.

NSUK has become the first university globally to offer a postgraduate program in Medical Geology. This development positions the institution as a leader in this emerging multidisciplinary field, which investigates the interactions between geological processes and human health.

The Executive Secretary of the Solid Minerals Development Fund (SMDF), Hajiya Fatima Umaru Shinkafi, delivered the keynote address. She highlighted Nigeria's vast mineral potential and the critical role of the SMDF in bridging investment gaps in the mining sector. She emphasized the need for safe mining practices and entrepreneurial thinking among students.

The event featured the formal induction of the pioneer postgraduate students and the presentation of special awards of recognition to Dr. Emmanuel Akabe and Hajiya Fatima Shinkafi for their contributions to NSUK and the mining sector. Notably, Dr. K'tso Nghargbu, Nigeria's first medical geologist, was awarded a professorial chair in Medical Geology, with a significant research grant.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, reaffirmed NSUK's commitment to pioneering research in sustainable mining, environmental safety, and economic diversification. The university's visionary leadership has been commended by dignitaries, including the Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe.
