National Bio-Safety Agency Collaborates with BUK to Enhance Bio-Security Measures

The National Bio-Safety Agency (NBSA) has expressed its commitment to collaborating with Bayero University, Kano (BUK) to strengthen bio-security measures on the university campuses.

The Director General of NBSA, Mrs. Agnes Yemisi Asagbra, made this known during a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor on Wednesday.

Mrs. Asagbra highlighted the agency's mandate to enhance bio safety and bio security, emphasizing the need to revitalize the relationship between NBSA and BUK. She expressed the agency's commitment to supporting genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in agricultural biotechnology and ensuring the safety of modified genetically products for human, animal, and environmental health.

The agency, established by an edict in 2015 and amended in 2019, is empowered to guarantee the safety of these products. Mrs. Asagbra also highlighted the agency's focus on biosecurity, including the establishment of a dedicated group under the Bio-security and Action Firm in 2021. This initiative aims to address biosecurity challenges effectively, with implementation slated for 2023.

In seeking collaboration with BUK, Mrs. Asagbra proposed joint bio-safety and biosecurity-related projects to promote best practices in bio-safety across various disciplines. This partnership aims to enhance the university's bio-security measures and promote a safe and secure environment for research and innovation."
