National Open University of Nigeria Owerri Study Centre Conducts Fire Safety Training for Staff

The Owerri Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) recently organized a one-day fire safety training for its staff, focusing on effective fire prevention and response measures. Held at the centre’s premises in Owerri, Imo State, the program was led by two experts from the Federal Fire Service, Owerri.

Centre Director, Dr. Juliana Ndunagu, emphasized the importance of fire safety knowledge, urging staff to take the training seriously. The session, divided into interactive and practical segments, covered basic fire-fighting techniques and safety precautions.

In the interactive segment, fire safety expert Mr. Kelechi Nwodu explained essential fire prevention practices, describing the three elements of fire—fuel, oxygen, and heat—and highlighting the need to keep flammable materials away from ignition sources. He detailed the four fire classifications (Classes A, B, C, and D) and the importance of timely reporting electrical hazards.

Nwodu also advised on extinguishing methods such as cooling, starvation, and smothering, stressing the importance of prompt action, including raising alarms and switching off control switches during an outbreak. He recommended equipping the centre with fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and fireproof doors.

The practical session, led by Mr. Ikenna Nwachukwu, included live demonstrations of fire extinguishing techniques. Staff, including security personnel, actively participated in the exercise.

Mrs. Ogechi Anyanwu, in her vote of thanks, commended Dr. Ndunagu for initiating the training, describing it as a valuable and enlightening experience for all staff involved.
