NOUN and ITF Open Collaborative Partnership Talks for Enhanced Student Training

The Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Olufemi Peters, recently hosted Mrs. Chinelo Assumpta Chinedu, the newly-appointed Area Manager of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) Gwagwalada Area Office, along with her team, for a courtesy visit aimed at enhancing collaborative partnerships and advancing student training initiatives.

The visit, which took place at the university’s headquarters in Abuja, underscored the shared goals of NOUN and ITF in equipping students with practical skills that meet the demands of Nigeria’s evolving job market. Prof. Isaac Butswat, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at NOUN, represented the Vice-Chancellor and chaired the meeting.

During the meeting, Prof. Butswat highlighted the importance of NOUN’s Open and Distance Learning (ODL) model in providing students with practical training opportunities. He emphasized the value of partnerships like the one with ITF in strengthening practical learning outcomes, particularly through the SIWES (Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme) programme.

Mrs. Chinedu expressed optimism about the partnership, noting that ITF’s mission of bridging the gap between academic learning and industry practice aligns well with NOUN’s objectives. She highlighted the potential to co-develop training modules and improve the placement process to benefit students.

The discussion also addressed challenges in student training programs, such as funding, logistics, and placement coordination. Dr. Elvis Otamere, NOUN’s Acting Director of SIWES, outlined the current status of the programme and identified areas where ITF’s expertise could help overcome existing constraints.
