NBTE Urges NYSC to Reconsider Registration Policy for HND Science Laboratory Technology Graduates

Prof. Idris M. Bugaje, Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), has issued a formal request to the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to address a recent issue affecting graduates with Higher National Diplomas (HND) in Science Laboratory Technology (SLT).

The NBTE has been informed that NYSC orientation camps have refused to register HND SLT graduates due to the lack of Professional Registration Certification from the National Institute for Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT). Prof. Bugaje stated that the NBTE has never mandated professional body registration as a graduation requirement.

The NBTE and NISLT conduct joint program accreditations as per their Memorandum of Understanding, but professional registration is not a prerequisite for NYSC mobilization.

Prof. Bugaje has urged the NYSC to reverse this policy and allow HND graduates of all fields to be mobilized. He emphasized that professional bodies can register graduates post-NYSC for those wishing to practice professionally. The NBTE stresses that its regulations govern polytechnic programs, and no professional body should override this authority.

The NBTE has requested the NYSC to comply with the existing guidelines set by the Head of Service of the Federation and to ensure that all eligible graduates are permitted to participate in the NYSC program.
