NDAOWA, CBN HOST 3-DAY FINANCIAL LITERACY WORKSHOP FOR WOMEN

The Nigerian Defence Academy Officers` Wives Association (NDAOWA), in conjunction with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has organised a 3-day financial literacy programme for women at the Major General JN Garba Hall, Ribadu Campus, from Monday 27th to Wednesday 29th November, 2023. The workshop will see the women receive special training on financial planning, management and resource mobilisation skills.

The training further aims at equipping the participants with the knowledge, skills and basic principles of financial planning and management, as well as ensuring they are able to plan, control and analyse their finances effectively.

Declaring the workshop open, the Special Guest of Honour, the Commandant Nigerian Defence Academy, (NDA)Major General JO Ochai, represented by the Deputy Commandant ,AVM SK Aneke, thanked the Coordinator of NDAOWA, Mrs Ruth Ochai, and the Central Bank team for organizing the workshop.He disclosed that in the coming days the participants will go through an extensive lectures regarding finances management, stating that at the end of the workshop, the women would become better financial managers.The Deputy Commandant added that the workshop will help the women differentiate between needs and wants, which he noted will help them in managing resources, record keeping and financial planning.

In his words “It is one thing to make money and another to manage money. decision making, when it comes to financial activities, can make or mar your future, especially with regards to managing the home. Because we are in a tight economic situation, it is therefore pertinent to save and plan by differentiating needs from wants.”

AVM Aneke thanked everyone for coming and enjoined all participants to share and exchange ideas which will help in sharpening them towards becoming better financial managers.

In her welcome remarks, the Coordinator NDAOWA,Mrs Ruth Ochai, represented by the Deputy Coordinator NDAOWA, Mrs Ngozi Aneke, expressed her delight and enthusiasm to speak at the workshop.She thanked the Commandant NDA, Maj Gen JO Ochai, and the CBN team for their support towards ensuring the workshop became a reality. She also thanked the women for actively gracing the event.

Speaking further, she said “The importance of financial literacy cannot be overemphasized in today’s world.As it is the cornerstone on which we build a secure future, make informed decisions and achieve our aspirations.It also helps us manage resources effectively, invest wisely and plan for retirement”. Mrs Aneke further stated that the workshop is pivotal because women are pillars of support to the family, and when equipped with financial knowledge, they would be better prepared to assist in managing finances and secure a better future for their families.

The NDAOWA Deputy Coordinator also revealed that the workshop is further aimed at establishing gender inclusiveness in finance so that women can become key players in the business world, thereby empowering them to contribute their own quota to national development, as well as aiding women to save up and establish their own businesses, become job creators and help bridge the gender gap. “A woman who saves the money she earns and also the money her husband gives her, will be able to help her family in times of needs and unforeseen circumstances, and will more readily be drawn to entrepreneurship,” she added.

Mrs Aneke enjoined all participants to use the opportunity to learn and grow and empower themselves by engaging actively, asking questions and paying attention to the resource persons.

Also speaking at the event, leader of the apex bank team,Mr Oluwafemi Fakeye, said the the prime purpose of the workshop is to promote financial literacy, awareness and to teach women how to make the most effective use of their finances by making more, managing as well as growing it.

The event was attended by the Academy Provost,Principal Staff officers of NDA, senior academic and non academic staff , members of NAOWA, NDAOWA amongst others.
