The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced its full participation in the nationwide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), raising concerns about the continuation of the ongoing West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Dr. Amos Dangut, the Head of the Nigeria National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), appealed for an exemption from the strike to ensure the smooth conduct of the WASSCE.

However, Dr. Mike Ike-Ene, the Secretary General of NUT, emphasized the union's commitment to the strike, citing grievances over inadequate salaries for teachers.

The nationwide strike, which commenced on Monday, June 3, 2024, was initiated by Organised Labour to demand an increase in the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.

In light of the strike, Ike-Ene instructed all NUT members to participate fully, expressing dissatisfaction with the current wage situation, particularly in some states where minimum wage requirements have not been met.
