OAU Clarifies Peter Obi Lecture Cancellation, Cites Security and Due Process Concerns

The authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have issued an official clarification over the controversy surrounding the proposed lecture involving former presidential candidate and ex-Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, stating that the situation has been widely misunderstood and misrepresented in public discourse.

In a statement released by the institution, the university explained that the invitation extended to Peter Obi was initiated by a section of the student body without the full knowledge or prior engagement of the university administration until barely a day before the scheduled event.

According to the management, such engagements involving high-profile individuals require early notification and formal coordination with the university authorities to allow for proper planning, particularly in areas of logistics, security, and crowd management.

The university noted that adequate preparation would have included collaboration with relevant security agencies such as the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services to ensure the safety of the guest, students, staff, and members of the public expected to attend.

It further stated that due to the late notification and inability to conclude the necessary arrangements within the available timeframe, approval could not be granted for the use of Oduduwa Hall as requested by the event organizers.

The institution emphasized that the decision was strictly procedural and grounded in safety considerations, rather than any form of disrespect or disregard for Peter Obi’s status. It stressed that the former presidential candidate remains a respected figure whose engagements would ordinarily be welcomed under proper administrative conditions.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to promoting intellectual discourse and hosting distinguished personalities, while insisting that due process must always be followed in the planning of public events within the university environment.

He urged students, staff, and external organizers to adhere strictly to established protocols when planning events, noting that such measures are designed to protect lives, maintain order, and safeguard the reputation of the institution.

The university concluded by reiterating that it remains open to academic and civic engagements of national importance, provided that proper procedures are observed and adequate notice is given to allow for responsible coordination.
