Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, is considering introducing a waiver for extra-year students facing academic difficulties. This decision follows a troubling incident involving a 200-level student who reportedly attempted self-harm due to academic challenges.
An internal memo dated November 1, 2024, revealed that the university's Senate Division convened a Special Committee of Deans meeting to address the situation. Signed by Deputy Registrar M.S. Oluwajoba, the memo outlined proposed measures to support students with academic struggles, particularly those repeating one or two courses.
The affected student, whose name was withheld, had transferred from the Faculty of Pharmacy to the Department of Biology Education. The incident, reported on October 16, 2024, prompted swift deliberations among the university's leadership. In the memo titled “Decision Extract: Re: Special Meeting of Committee of Deans,” the university encouraged staff, departmental boards, and advisers to offer increased support to students.
A prior circular dated October 17, 2024, suggested that students with minimal academic deficiencies could be allowed to graduate on compassionate grounds without altering their class of degree. However, a top university official stated that the decision remains under consideration and has not yet been finalized.
