OAU Don Advocates Review of SURCON Act to Enhance Survey Profession in Nigeria
Professor Adewole Adedeji, Dean of the Faculty of Law at Obafemi Awolowo University, has advocated for the review of the Surveyors Registration Council of Nigeria (SURCON) Act.
The need to review the act that established the Surveyors Registration Council of Nigeria (SURCON) has been emphasized as crucial for protecting and enhancing the survey profession in Nigeria. This call was made by Professor Adewole Adedeji, Dean of the Faculty of Law at Obafemi Awolowo University, during the Fellows Connect and New Fellows Welcome event of the Ogun State Body of Fellows. The event, themed ‘Enhancing the Dignity of the Survey Profession in Nigeria: The Imperative of Strict Adherence to Professional Ethics,’ was held at Ogun NIS Multipurpose Hall, Magbon, Abeokuta.

In his address, Professor Adedeji, the guest speaker, urged the elders of the profession, primarily members of the Board of Fellows, to proactively address policies, particularly those from the government, that could negatively impact the sustainability of the profession. He highlighted that the SURCON Act, enacted over a decade ago, is overdue for a review to align with current trends in modern technologies, ideas, and innovations.

Kehinde Isijola, Chairman of the Ogun State Chapter of the Nigeria Institution of Surveyors, Board of Fellows (BOF), commended the theme of the program as timely and educational for the Board of Fellows. He emphasized that the insights gained would enhance their mentorship roles and positively impact professional practice.
While welcoming the new Fellows into the body, Isijola encouraged them to remain upright and uphold the profession's ethics, noting that ethical practices are essential for positive achievements in any profession.
Chief Bode Adeaga, the chairman of the event, also urged the new Fellows to be good ambassadors and maintain high standards in their practices, emphasizing that surveying plays a crucial role in environmental management and conservation activities.
