OAUTHC Doctors Decry Snake Invasion and Staff Welfare Crisis
Doctors at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, have reported an alarming invasion of hospital wards by snakes, posing significant risks to patients and staff.
The Association of Resident Doctors at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC) has raised alarm over the alarming invasion of hospital wards by snakes, highlighting a dire need for improved safety and working conditions.
In a communique released yesterday by Dr. Enesi Ibukunoluwa, President, and Dr. Michael Omenugha, General Secretary, the union outlined three urgent issues requiring Federal Government intervention: the snake invasion, poor staff welfare, and a severe shortage of medical personnel.
Doctors reported multiple incidents of snakes entering patient wards, posing significant risks to both patients and staff. The association emphasized that immediate action is required to address this hazard to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals within the hospital premises.
The communique also revealed troubling details regarding staff welfare. Forty-two doctors have not received their salaries for 14 months, and many are yet to be included in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). Additionally, various allowances remain unpaid, exacerbating the financial strain on medical professionals.
Compounding the welfare issues is a critical shortage of medical staff at OAUTHC. The hospital is struggling to maintain adequate staffing levels, impacting the quality of care provided to patients. The union calls for immediate recruitment to fill the gaps and ensure that the hospital can continue to function effectively.
The Association of Resident Doctors is urging the Federal Government to take swift and decisive action to address these pressing concerns. Ensuring a safe working environment, timely payment of salaries, and adequate staffing are crucial to maintaining the hospital's ability to provide high-quality medical care.
