Old Boys Owerri Government school Celebrate Octogenarian, Nath Okoro

The 92-year-old, popularly known as Mr. Railway and who is also a member of Government Secondary School, Owerri Old Boys Association, Lagos Branch was at the weekend celebrated by the Old Boy Association (OBA) Lagos Branch of Government Secondary School, Owerri (GSSO), Imo State, at a colourful ceremony held at the Peninsula Hotel, Lekki, Lagos.

He is the pioneer Managing Director/ Chief Executive of Nigerian Railway Corporation, Elder Nathaniel Okoro, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his selfless and tireless services to the country, community and humanity.

The awards ceremony was part of the activities lined up by GSSO Old Boys Association, Lagos Branch for the 2023 End-of-Year Award Night and Fundraiser. Also honoured at the event is the Chairman of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, who received a Special Award in recognition of his appetite for peaceful resolution of conflicts. Similarly, Chinwe Mbakwem was recognised with the Exceptional, OGSSIAN, (Government Secondary School, Owerri) Award for his Philanthropy and reliability.

The Distinguished Long Service Award went to Ezenwa Ngozi Ajaero. Others, who were honoured with Special Award recognition include, Pastor Basil Chukwuezi, Pastor Okechukwu Njemanze, Udochukwu Onyema-Nwankwo, Lucky Abarah and Engr. Chidi Ugboaja.

The 2023 Inductees include, McDennis Benjamin Igbo, Ajie Emmanuel, Emenyonu Uzochukwu, Emmanuel Ukanwa, Ugochukwu Ebere and Nwadike Godswill. Former Chairman/ Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Breweries, Elder Felix Ohiwerei, who is also Grand Patron of GSSO Old Boy Association Lagos Branch was honoured with an investiture alongside, Dr. Ndi Onuekwusi (Grand Patron), Dr. Dozie Irrechukwu (Patron), Sir Moshe Amaechi (Patron and Ikechukwu Victor Okoronkwo (Patron).

In his remarks at the dinner and award night, Chairman, GSSO Old Boys Association, Lagos Branch, Sir Franklin Ojukwu, acknowledged support given to him by members of the association towards achieving the set objectives.

“I have received massive support from our distinguished old boys, especially my seniors and some of our younger old boys who have not only challenged the commitment of our members but have given me hope in the prolonged future of our association.

“We have rolled out a lot of innovative programmes to attract and sustain membership. From the CBE Project under the Capacity Building & Empowerment Initiative to the ICM (Institution, Community & Members) Project under the Welfare Package System, we have witnessed a supportive response that calls for continuance.

“Today, we are not only celebrating our success over the past year, we also feel we should honour a few of our members for their commitment to this association as well as our friends and partners.

“Tonight also, we celebrate one of our Octogenarians, ‘the Unusual, Usual Man’, one of our unsung heroes in Nigeria, Elder Nath Okoro with a Lifetime Achievement Award,” he said.
