Oyo State High Court Grants Muslim Students Right to Wear Hijab in UI School
An Oyo State High Court ruling in Ibadan has granted female Muslim students at the University of Ibadan International School (ISI) the right to wear hijab over their school uniforms. This landmark judgment, delivered by Justice Moshood Ishola, marks a significant victory for the students and their families in their quest to uphold their religious rights
The controversy surrounding the usage of hijab by female Muslim students at the University of Ibadan International School dates back to November 2018 when the school denied some students the right to wear hijab over their uniforms. This decision prompted legal action from the affected students and their parents against the school, the University of Ibadan, and several principal officers.

The ruling, delivered on Wednesday afternoon, was based on previous judgments, including those at the Supreme Court level. Justice Moshood Ishola emphasized that as a public institution, the school must respect the religious rights of its students. He affirmed that denying the students the right to wear hijab infringed upon their fundamental human rights.
The plaintiffs in the case, including Faridah Akerele, Aaliyah Dopesi, Akhifah Dokpesi, and others, expressed their satisfaction with the court's decision. They hailed it as a victory for religious freedom and applauded the judiciary for upholding justice and equality.
The judgment has far-reaching implications, not only for the University of Ibadan International School but also for other public institutions across the country.
