Presidency Lauds Progress on FUTA Teaching Hospital Project in Akure

A delegation from the Presidency, led by Dr. Salaudeen Jimoh, Director of Hospital Services at the Federal Ministry of Health, expressed strong commendation for the rapid progress on the permanent site of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Teaching Hospital, a key project for the university’s College of Health Sciences. Jimoh and members of his team who were in Akure at the behest of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, visited the site on a working inspection on November 12, 2024, accompanied by FUTA's Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, and Ondo State Health Commissioner, Dr. Olubanji Ajaka.

During the visit, Dr. Jimoh praised the ongoing development, highlighting near-completion structures such as the twin auditoriums, clinical sciences building, and health centers. "With support from TETFUND, the Ondo State government, and the local community, the dream of establishing a fully functional Teaching Hospital at FUTA is swiftly becoming a reality,” Dr. Jimoh remarked. He also expressed appreciation for the state’s cooperation in facilitating FUTA’s use of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital in Akure as an interim facility for clinical services and student training.

Dr. Jimoh emphasized the team’s mission to assess these facilities to ensure FUTA’s Teaching Hospital meets federal tertiary standards, laying a foundation for future personnel and equipment provision.

Vice Chancellor Professor Oladiji shared her gratitude for the proactive involvement of both federal and state governments, attributing the project’s swift progress to President Tinubu’s commitment. “This initiative will contribute to building a skilled workforce equipped to tackle health challenges in Nigeria,” she said.

Ondo State Health Commissioner Dr. Ajaka reinforced the state’s commitment to collaborative efforts, affirming that the hospital will benefit not only FUTA students but also the entire Ondo community. He noted the positive impacts on revenue, healthcare quality, and job creation that the Teaching Hospital will bring to the state.

Dr. Olufemi Oyinsan, Chair of the FUTA-Akure Partnership, applauded Professor Oladiji’s leadership, while thanking federal and state authorities for their ongoing support. The team concluded their visit with a courtesy call to the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Adelusi, who assured that all land documentation issues for the hospital’s 200-hectare site had been resolved, guaranteeing full local support.

The delegation from Abuja included Dr. Saidu Ahmed, Senior Technical Adviser to the Coordinating Minister of Health; Mrs. Tetshoma Dafeta, Director of Human Relations; and Mr. Ejembi Felix, Special Assistant to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health.
