Provost Claims Personal Interests Behind Calls for His Removal at FCE Akoka
The Provost of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Dr. Wahab Azeez, has alleged that individuals with personal interests are behind the calls for his removal from office. Dr. Azeez stated that the ongoing protests, which turned violent and led to the institution's closure, aim to force his resignation.
“Those behind the crisis are doing it to frustrate me so that I can resign, but I stand for justice,” Dr. Azeez said in Lagos.

The protests, involving students and staff, resulted in the Federal Government shutting down the institution and ordering students to vacate the campus.
The leadership crisis began in May when some staff members, under the aegis of Concerned Staff, claimed that Dr. Azeez’s tenure, which began in 2019, had ended on May 26, 2024. They cited a law signed by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023, limiting the tenure of college provosts to a single five-year term. Dr. Azeez contends that the new law does not apply to him as he had already started a second term before its enactment.
The situation escalated on Tuesday when students and staff staged a violent protest during a meeting of the college’s Governing Council. The protesters damaged official cars and demanded that Dr. Azeez not enter the college premises.
