The School of Agriculture of Lagos State University has moved to enhance its knowledge and application of the latest trends in agriculture with its reception of two America-based agriculture experts - Prof. Richard Omotoye and Dr. Leonard Githinji - on Thursday 15th June 2023,
The duo, who were led to an entry meeting with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, by the Dean, School of Agriculture, Prof. O.T.F Abanikanda, would provide hands-on training to members of staff of the School with the aim of enhancing the food generation capacity of the School to meet the second SDG goal, which is to eradicate hunger.
Leader of the team, Prof. Omotoye, an Awori by birth who has spent the better part of the last two decades in the United States, expressed his excitement to be back home having spent a good part of his childhood growing around the University community. "To be here gives me much joy and I am proud to see what LASU has become." He also congratulated the Vice Chancellor on her accomplishments in the university.
Dr. Leonard Githinji, the second member of the team, a Kenyan by birth, noted that part of the team's assignment would be to explore ways to maximize small spaces to carry out large scale farming considering the small size of a city like Lagos. Both agric experts are from the Virginia State University, United States of America.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, while welcoming the team, thanked the Dean, Prof. Abanikanda for facilitating the visit and assured the visitors of a good stay during the six weeks that they would be staying at the Epe Campus.
"I want you to pass the wealth of your knowledge to our people. We are working towards making LASU the best University in West Africa and our strength in Agriculture would go a long way to help us achieve that. Please give us everything you have, don't hold back", she urged the team.
The meeting, which held at the Vice Chancellor's Conference Room, also had in attendance members of the University Management and aides of the Vice Chancellor.
