President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor John Obafunwa as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), effective July 24, 2024. This appointment follows the conclusion of Professor Babatunde Salako's tenure, which ends on July 23.

Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the President's spokesperson, confirmed the appointment in a statement on Monday. The President expressed his gratitude to Professor Salako for his contributions and anticipates that Professor Obafunwa will leverage his extensive experience to advance NIMR’s mission of spearheading research on diseases of public health significance in Nigeria.

Professor Obafunwa, who earned his medical degree from the University of Lagos in 1980, has a distinguished career in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology. He pursued further specialization in Forensic Pathology in Scotland and obtained a law degree in England in 2004. His professional journey includes roles in the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, and the UK before returning to Nigeria in 2004 as a Professor of Forensic Pathology at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM).

In his new role, Obafunwa is expected to enhance the dissemination of research findings and improve facilities and environments for health research and training, collaborating with both federal and state health ministries.
