Tragedy in Oyo: Abducted Teacher Beheaded by Bandits Amid Rescue Efforts
Bandits have reportedly beheaded Michael Oyedokun, one of the teachers abducted from Community High School in Ahoro-Esinele, Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. A disturbing video showing the killing surfaced online on Sunday, sparking outrage and renewed fears over insecurity in the state.
Fear and grief have gripped residents of Oriire Local Government Area in Oyo State following the brutal killing of one of the abducted teachers from Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele.
Michael Oyedokun, one of the seven teachers kidnapped during a violent attack on the school, was reportedly beheaded by bandits in a disturbing video that surfaced online on Sunday. The footage, which circulated on Telegram and was later obtained by journalists on Monday, showed the teacher tied up and forced to speak before being killed.
The horrifying development has sparked outrage and renewed concerns about worsening insecurity in parts of Oyo State and across Nigeria.
Residents of the affected community, alongside families of the kidnapped victims, have been thrown into mourning as calls intensify for urgent government intervention. Many are demanding stronger security measures and swift action to rescue the remaining captives before further tragedy occurs.
The incident has also reignited debates about the safety of schools and rural communities increasingly targeted by criminal groups.
Confirming the incident, Dr. Suleimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser on Media to Governor Seyi Makinde, expressed the governor’s condolences to the family of the slain teacher.
According to him, the state government remains committed to rescuing the remaining victims through both military and non-military strategies.
He revealed that security agencies have already arrested about six suspects linked to the kidnapping operation. Authorities believe some of those arrested may have acted as informants or logistics providers for the abductors.
Additionally, another security outfit in the state reportedly apprehended three more persons of interest connected to the case.
The rescue operation has not been without casualties. Olanrewaju disclosed that members of the military tactical team, Amotekun Corps operatives, and local vigilantes lost their lives during attempts to rescue the abducted victims.
According to the government, the security personnel were killed after encountering Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) allegedly planted by the kidnappers.
He, however, noted that injured operatives are responding positively to treatment and assured that the government would cover their medical care.
Governor Makinde appealed to families of the victims, religious groups, and concerned citizens to remain patient as efforts continue to secure the release of those still in captivity.
“So, please, there may not be quick fixes, but we will continue to endeavour to push ourselves to the limit to resolve this quickly,” the governor said.
He further confirmed that seven teachers were abducted during the attack and described the killing of Oyedokun, reportedly a mathematics teacher, as a painful setback.
The abduction occurred on Friday, May 15, when heavily armed gunmen stormed Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele. During the invasion, the school principal, several teachers, and some students were taken away by the attackers.
The incident came just weeks after another failed kidnap attempt along the Ibadan-Ijebu Road that reportedly left one traveler dead, deepening fears over rising criminal activity in the region.
As investigations continue and rescue operations intensify, many Nigerians are once again questioning the effectiveness of current security measures and the growing threat posed by armed bandit groups operating across the country.
