UCH Marks World Hand Hygiene Day 2026 with Call for Renewed Clinical Vigilance

The Medical Microbiology Department of the Hospital celebrated the World Hand Hygiene Day 2026 with a sensitization visit to the Management at the hospital's boardroom on 5th May 2026.

The Head of Department, Prof. Samuel Fayemiwo, remarked that: "this year’s Hand Hygiene Day, with the theme 'Action Saves Lives', was held in line with the World Health Organization’s call for healthcare providers and supporters to refresh their actions on hand hygiene, infection prevention, and control to protect patients and health workers from diseases. 

Dr Olufunmilayo Makanjuola also highlighted the five steps involved in handwashing and hand hygiene as follows:

1. Before touching a patient, wash or sanitize your hands.

2. Before any procedure, perform hand hygiene.

3. After contact with a patient’s body fluids, maintain your hand hygiene.

4. After leaving the patient, wash your hands.

5. Wash your hands after leaving the patient’s surroundings, such as after touching items within the patient’s premises.

Dr Makanjuola stated that:" maintaining the above-mentioned steps in hand hygiene practice will drastically reduce the spread of germs or diseases" .

Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Prof. Olubukola Adesina, warmly welcomed the team and appreciated them for reminding healthcare workers of the importance of maintaining hand hygiene practice. She pledged that Management will provide the needed materials for members of staff and others.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, encouraged the team to spread the importance of hand hygiene to health workers and urged them to work hand in hand with the Infectious Disease Unit of the hospital to provide more information on hand hygiene practice within the hospital and beyond.
