UI Don Says Complexity Can Be Transformed into Clarity

A professor of Operations Management and Productivity Systems at the University of Ibadan, Professor Christopher Osita Anyaeche has stated that complexity can be transformed into clarity through deliberate system design and effective management.

He made the statement while delivering the 611th inaugural lecture of the University of Ibadan on behalf of the Faculty of Technology.

The lecture was titled " From Complexity to Clarity: Operations Management and the Pursuit of Work Systems' Excellence."

Professor Anyaeche noted that the modern world is characterised by increasing complexity - human beings are complex systems who interact with one another, depend on shared processes, and operate within structured environments.

According to him, beyond this, humans interact with machines, and machines interact with other machines while many modern technologies replicate human capabilities to further increase system complexity.

He noted that as organisations evolve, they must manage multiple processes, diverse technologies, numerous stakeholders, and increasing expectations.

If not properly managed, the Inaugural Lecturer submitted that the complexity would lead to inefficiency, confusion, and poor performance.

He stated that Operations Management provides the framework to achieve transformation through the four key principles of simplification (removing unnecessary elements); standardisation (ensuring consistency); optimisation (improving performance); and sustainability (ensuring long term viability) adding that together, these principles enable organisations to achieve clarity, efficiency, resilience, and excellence in their operations.

Professor Anyaeche concluded that complexity is an unavoidable feature of modern systems and that clarity is not the absence of complexity but the mastery of it.

He stated that ultimately, the pursuit of work systems' excellence is the pursuit of clarity - designed deliberately, implemented effectively, and sustained consistently.

He noted that despite technological advancements, operations remain fundamentally human systems saying that machines and algorithms support processes but people create, make decisions, innovate, and uphold ethical standards.

He said the design of work systems must therefore consider human factors, motivation, teamwork, and leadership because poorly designed systems lead to frustration, low morale, and errors while well designed systems empower workers, enhance learning and foster ownership.

The inaugural lecture was the eighth in the series for the 2025/2026 academic session.
