The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, delivered a heartfelt funeral oration on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at Trenchard Hall, honoring the late Professor Thompson Adeyemi Badejoko, a distinguished geochemist and former Head of the Department of Geology at the university.
In a gathering that included members of the university’s leadership, academic colleagues, family, and friends, Professor Adebowale praised the late Professor Badejoko's immense contributions to academia and society. He described Badejoko as a scholar of great repute, who left an indelible mark on geochemistry and mineralogy through his extensive research, mentorship, and leadership.
Born on February 2, 1945, in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Professor Badejoko had his early education in Lagos and later attended Government College, Ibadan (GCI). He began his academic journey at the University of Ibadan in 1966, initially pursuing a degree in Geology before switching to Chemistry, humorously citing his difficulty in adjusting to fieldwork. Despite this, he later earned a master’s degree in Geochemistry and built a prolific career in the field.
Professor Badejoko joined the University of Ibadan’s Department of Geology in 1971 and rose through the ranks, becoming a full professor in 1987. His groundbreaking research on the petrogenesis and structural evolution of Nigeria's Younger Granites remains a reference point in the study of Nigerian geology. He served as Head of the Department of Geology multiple times and held various key positions within the university, including as a member of the Senate and on several academic committees.
Beyond academia, Professor Badejoko was an active member of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), where he served as the 23rd President from 2005 to 2007. He received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the prestigious 2020 NMGS/SHELL award for his contributions to the field of Earth Sciences.
In his eulogy, Professor Adebowale highlighted Badejoko's dedication as an educator, describing him as a diligent and compassionate mentor to many students, guiding them from undergraduate to doctoral levels. Even after his retirement in 2005, Badejoko remained active, consulting for both local and international organizations on environmental and geotechnical projects.
Professor Badejoko passed away peacefully on August 17, 2024, at the age of 79, leaving behind his wife, Dr. Adedoja Badejoko, their children, and grandchildren. As Professor Adebowale concluded his tribute, he stated, "Here lies the body of Professor Adeyemi Badejoko. Your tale is one of triumph, your memory a beacon of excellence. Your legacy endures, your story continues, and your life will forever be celebrated."
The memorial service celebrated the life and legacy of Professor Thompson Adeyemi Badejoko, whose contributions to academia, research, and society will continue to inspire future generations.
