In the 13th Convocation lecture of Fountain University, Osogbo, Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, emphasized the need for closer collaboration between academia and industries to leverage research for national development.

During his lecture on the theme 'From Within to Without: The Ripple Effect of University Challenges on National Destiny,' Professor Na’Allah expressed concern over the underutilization of research findings, noting that many valuable research works in the Nigerian university system are left unexplored due to a lack of collaboration between universities and industries.

He highlighted the practices in world-class universities where lecturers dedicate specific days to interact with industries, present research ideas, and seek reciprocal engagements. Professor Na’Allah stressed the importance of a proactive approach, urging Nigerian universities to initiate collaborations rather than passively waiting for industries to approach them.

The Vice-Chancellor pointed out that without conscious efforts to foster collaboration, Nigerian universities might struggle to achieve the same level of success as their counterparts in the USA, UK, Taiwan, China, or other nations that prioritize their university systems.

Professor Na’Allah also observed the potential for private universities in Nigeria to outpace public institutions in introducing and implementing innovations. He questioned why private universities had not taken the lead in providing the skills, experts, and advanced talents needed to propel Nigeria to new heights.

The call for increased collaboration between academia and industries aligns with the broader goal of enhancing the impact of research on national development, fostering innovation, and addressing challenges faced by the Nigerian university system.
