UNICROSS Students Shine at Port Harcourt Tech Expo 2024

A team of innovators from Cross River State University (UNICROSS) has brought honour and pride to the University at the ongoing Port Harcourt Expo 2024 by exhibiting technological innovations that have been unanimously adjudged by audiences as world class in form, content and packaging.

Among the innovative exhibits is the glass bottle cutting machine – a first of its kind in Nigeria that cuts waste glass bottles into drinking cups and other useful items. With this machine, tons of waste glass bottles thrown in the environment can be upcycled into useful objects, thereby serving environmental protection.

Another impressive innovation is the DC electric throwing wheel, which is the primary equipment used by potters. The machines are normally imported at huge foreign exchange costs. This Unicross invention costs only a fraction of the imported costs and functions at par with global qualities. The third innovation exhibited in the acclaimed Easycook solar stove, which development has now progressed to the market-ready version for investors to upscale. 

In this era of increased electricity tariffs, the EasyCook solar stove has been a visionary technology developed ahead of its time, and which has now become even more critical for millions of families needing to cook at less cost. For this great outing, a number of individuals have expressed interest in buying the products.

A major government agency has indicated interest to partner with UNICROSS to develop and execute a training project for youths in the Niger Delta States. The objective of this planned project is to empower youths to develop skills and competences to produce some of the products that the Unicross Team has shown around Nigeria.

With consistency in productivity, intellectual and technological outputs, the University of Cross River State has carved out a niche as Nigeria's hotspot for innovation and inventions.

Earlier on in the year, the UNICROSS Team had a classic outing at the Technology and Innovation Fair 2024 in Abuja, hosted by the Federal Ministry of Innovation and Technology, where it was part of the State Continent that secured first place for Cross River State and Fourth position award for Universities.There is no doubt at all that the driving force in these achievements is the dogged push, funding and support that the Vice Chancellor and Management of the University of Cross River State gives to the Team. There are definitely great potentials in Unicross that, as we continue to develop, will establish the University as the centre of inventions and innovations in Nigeria.
