UNICROSS SUG Warns Students Against Paying Unapproved Portal Charges

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has cautioned students against making any payments on the university portal over financial charges it says were not approved by student representatives.

In a statement dated December 20, 2025, and addressed to the student body, the SUG disclosed that several charges recently displayed on the portal were neither deliberated upon nor endorsed by the duly recognized student leadership.

The union explained that its attention was drawn to the reopening of the portal with multiple financial obligations, a development that has generated concern among students. It stressed that, as part of its responsibility to safeguard students’ welfare and rights, no student should be compelled to pay fees introduced without consultation and approval.

The SUG advised all students to suspend any portal-related payments until discussions between the union and university management are concluded. It described the enforcement of unapproved charges as a violation of due process capable of causing unnecessary hardship to students.

The union also called on the university management to close the portal until students resume from break, noting that keeping it open without the consent of student leadership could heighten tension within the university community.

According to the statement, the SUG leadership is currently engaging the university management through peaceful, constructive, and transparent dialogue aimed at reaching a resolution that protects students’ interests while recognizing the institution’s administrative responsibilities.

Students were urged to remain calm, law-abiding, and patient as talks continue, with the assurance that any official updates will be communicated through recognized SUG channels.
