UNIDEL holds workshop on pedagogical training

The University of Delta, Agbor, on Thursday, July 6th, 2023 held a one-day Workshop on Pedagogical Training for teaching staff, Myschoolnews report.

In her Address at the programme, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Stella Chiemeke charged the lecturers to take the training with all sense of seriousness as it has become imperative for them to undergo some retraining to retool their pedagogical skills and build high teaching standards for quality service delivery to the students.

The Vice Chancellor tasked the lecturers to dedicate adequate time for lecture preparation. The Programme Facilitator, Prof. (Ven) Mon Nwadiani, in his presentation on "Pedagogical Orientation in a University Setting", took a cursory look at the strategic virtues of University Pedagogue to include: Possession of superior exoteric and expert knowledge, a great measure of understanding, sound training in Pedagogical skills, spirited competence and confidence as well as interest and love for the job. He also dwelt on the three relevant Pedagogical Orientations in the University which include transmission, constructivist and transformative orientation.

The second presentation was on "Lecture Method" and was delivered by Prof. E. O. S. lyamu. He emphasized that a good lecturer is best described as a teacher and that one is trained as a teacher, but nobody is trained to be a lecturer.

He explained that every University owes itself some core responsibilities, one of which is to regenerate itself through innovative teaching and research aimed at feeding the minds and liquidating ignorance

In the third lecture, which was on ”Evaluation of Students", Prof J .N. Iyamu posited that to attain education goals, effective teaching and testing must highlight higher cognitive processes.

On Pedagotronics, the 4th resource person, Prof O.S. Adewale stated that lecturers need to enhance the learner's experience, explore the curriculum, break down barriers and revamp and deploy the necessary teaching technology.

The highpoint of the event was the presentation of Certificates of Appreciation to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Stella Chiemeke and the resource persons.
