UNILAG Alumni Rally to Support Promising Indigent Student in Need

Peter Adeniran, a 21-year-old student pursuing a degree in the Department of Linguistics, African and Asian Studies at the University of Lagos, found himself facing an uncertain future due to financial constraints. However, his journey took a remarkable turn when members of the department's alumni, from the 2008 set, stepped in to support him in a heartwarming gesture.

In a private ceremony held on a Saturday in Lagos, the alumni presented Peter Adeniran with a cheque of ₦150,000 to cover his mandatory fees for the academic session. This support was an exceptional act of kindness that has renewed Adeniran's hope and determination to pursue his education.

Speaking at the ceremony, Adeniran expressed his deep gratitude and promised not to let down the alumni who had shown faith in his potential. He shared his feelings of being overwhelmed by the unexpected assistance, stating that he had reached a point where he contemplated leaving school due to a lack of financial support.

Adeniran explained that he was unable to secure a bed space because payment of the obligatory fees was a prerequisite for the room allocation process. He recounted his initial despair when he realized that he lacked the means to meet the increased fee requirements introduced by the university administration for the current academic session.

"I must say I am overwhelmed and shocked at this turnaround o events in my life. I had already zeroed my mind to drop from school because help was not coming from anywhere, and so, there was no hope of continuing with my studies," he said.

He also emphasized the significance of the alumni's support, stating that it would forever be etched in his life's journey. Adeniran assured the alumni that he would make the most of the opportunity provided and never disappoint them for believing in his potential.

Adeniran's educational journey encountered a significant hurdle when the university unexpectedly raised the obligatory fees just as he was about to resume the academic year. As a self-sponsored student, he had hoped to find a way to cover the increased fees, continue his studies, and manage other associated expenses.

He had even sought guidance from his course adviser to discuss his predicament, and they were exploring possible solutions within the limited timeframe for course registration.

However, the situation took a positive turn when Adeniran received a call from his course adviser, instructing him to visit the school. The outcome of that meeting was the remarkable assistance extended by the UNILAG alumni, offering him a lifeline to continue his education and fulfill his academic ambitions.
