The University of Lagos (UNILAG) held its statutory Congregation meeting on Friday, September 19, 2025, at the J.F. Ade-Ajayi Auditorium, a session that combined administrative reflections, solemn remembrance, and a decisive election.

Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Congregation, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, delivered an address reviewing her administration’s milestones just fifty-four (54) days to the end of her third year in office. Her report, anchored on the FUTURE-READY agenda, highlighted progress in staff and student training, welfare initiatives, infrastructure upgrades, and institutional restructuring. She also responded to questions raised by members, restating her commitment to transparency and open dialogue.
The gathering was marked by a sombre moment when Professor Ogunsola announced the passing of Mr. Damilola Balogun, a 400-level student and President-elect of the Faculty of Education Students’ Association (NUESA). She further listed members of staff who had died since the last Congregation, including Professor Christiannah Omotuyule, who passed away on September 12, 2025. A minute of silence was observed in honour of the departed.

The highlight of the meeting was the election of Professor Musa Adebayo Obalola of the Department of Actuarial Science and Insurance as the Congregation’s representative on the University Governing Council. The process was conducted through e-voting, enabling members to cast their ballots remotely and ensuring swift collation of results. The election was overseen by the Director of the Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Centre (ESDC), Professor Adebisi Sunday, FNIM, who served as Returning Officer.

The Congregation, a constitutional body of the University, comprises all first-degree holders among UNILAG staff. Membership guidelines are rooted in the May 24, 1967 Senate Resolution, which extended eligibility to graduate members of the Library, Administrative and Technical Staff, as well as other posts approved by Senate. A further Senate Resolution of June 29, 2016 affirmed that only a first degree qualifies an individual for membership, rejecting the inclusion of Higher National Diploma (HND) holders even with a Master’s degree.
