UNILAG Hosts 3-Day Fire Safety and Prevention Sensitization Programme
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) hosted a three-day fire safety and prevention sensitization programme in collaboration with ACEDHARS and the UNILAG Fire Service Unit.
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has prioritized fire safety within its community through a comprehensive three-day public lecture and practical sessions on "Safeguarding Lives through Fire Prevention." The event, which began on July 3, 2024, was a collaborative effort between the African Centre of Excellence for Drug Research, Herbal Medicine Development and Regulatory Science (ACEDHARS), UNILAG, and the UNILAG Fire Service Unit.

The programme included practical fire simulation sessions, equipping participants with essential knowledge on using fire extinguishers and other firefighting equipment. Held at the Tolu Odugbemi Hall on the Akoka Campus for the first two days and at the Yaba and Idi-Araba campuses on the third day, the event attracted staff, vendors, and commercial transporters from across the university.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Omobolanle Ade-Ademilua, Centre Leader of ACEDHARS, highlighted the critical importance of the training, emphasizing its role in enhancing the community's preparedness for fire emergencies. "This is not just another programme about fire drills but one to prepare and train the community for fire prevention and emergency response," she stated.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa, representing the Vice-Chancellor, reaffirmed the university's unwavering commitment to safety. She commended the UNILAG Fire Services Unit for its continuous efforts in fire safety sensitization, urging participants to take the training seriously and report potential fire hazards.
Assistant Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Fire Service, Olusegun Samuel Oladunni, served as the keynote speaker, presenting a paper on "Understanding Fire Safety Regulations." He emphasized the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in fire prevention and provided essential tips on handling flammable materials and responding to fire emergencies.
The event concluded with a lively discussion, where participants engaged with the Assistant Comptroller-General, enhancing their understanding of fire safety.
