The University of Lagos (UNILAG) remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing maritime education in Nigeria as the UNILAG-IMS Project progresses on schedule, poised for completion in the first quarter of 2024. During a recent courtesy visit to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Headquarters, the UNILAG Management, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola, secured the commitment of NIMASA Director General Dr. Bashir Yusuf Jamoh, CFR, to ensure the timely conclusion of the Institute of Maritime Studies (IMS) UNILAG by April 2024.

Professor Ogunsola expressed gratitude to NIMASA for its enduring partnership and dedication to the UNILAG-IMS building project. Recognizing the project's significance in developing marine Sciences in Nigeria, she praised its swift progress and envisioned it as a pivotal hub for maritime sector stakeholders upon completion.

Beyond the infrastructure, Prof. Ogunsola emphasized UNILAG's broader ambition to excel in the maritime domain by cultivating capacities, fostering partnerships, and driving impactful research. She underscored the University's dedication to transforming the narrative in the maritime sector.

Dr. Bashir Yusuf Jamoh acknowledged UNILAG's proactiveness and commended the quality of UNILAG graduates, constituting over 25 percent of NIMASA staff. He affirmed NIMASA's commitment to promoting maritime education, assuring the completion and commissioning of the UNILAG-IMS Building by April 2024. Dr. Jamoh expressed confidence that the UNILAG-IMS would become a center for cutting-edge research, contributing to the repositioning of Nigeria's Blue Economy within the next five years.

To facilitate the integration of UNILAG-IMS into the national maritime education framework, Dr. Jamoh directed NIMASA's administrative arm to consolidate Memoranda of Understanding with various universities, providing guidance for curriculum development.

This landmark project, officially inaugurated on December 10, 2022, by former Minister of Transportation Engineer Mu’azu Jaji Sambo, is strategically located near the UNILAG Botanical Garden. Positioned to cater to manpower requirements for the contemporary maritime industry, the UNILAG-IMS Project signifies a significant step towards revolutionizing maritime education in Nigeria.
